Follow our journey.
Surgery Preparation Sessions are tailored specifically to each child. A child undergoing a long surgery involving the bones in the inner ear needs to understand falling asleep for surgery, what is going to happen, and also… what it will be like when he wakes up! Creating “dressings” for 🐻 Bear ears is part of it when you are only 6 year old. #sursgeryprep #medicalplay #surgerycenterprep #outpatienthospitalprep #inpatienthospitalprep
Sometimes we need a real string to stretch to the waiting room … just to make sure Mom or Dad is still close … #TheInvisibleString #Hopper
Today we decided that Playmobile people and Doll house people should have different expressions…. #feelings #theyalllookhappy
Collaborating with @fostervillagecharlotte is a joy, an honor and a privilege! #ChildLifeintheCommunity #FosterVillage #Siblings #IncredibleYOU!
“This is the real secret of life—to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realize it is play.” ~ Alan W. Watts #learning #playing #coping
BIG feelings … expression eggs … Grumpy Monkey 🙉 and a playground 🛝 made to suit all of the Egg 🥚 friends. #bigfeelings #expression #play
We started with individual fish... that come together in a group... all different with different experiences. Next, We shared our grief story about the special person that died. Following that we created the water and bubbles while sharing all of the support that children experience in their lives from family and friends to Kindermourn and learning how to calm their bodies. This is where we discussed different coping skills and how everyone needs different support. Next we added in seashells. The seashells represent memories and each child had the opportunity to share memories of their loved one. The memories were simple and complicated, short and long... all memories are important. All memories are different just like seashells. Finally, the glitter is added as the final addition of water and the reminder that they are surrounded by support, by care and by both kids and grownups who want to support them. May this serve as a reminder every time they look at their picture! We will finish our time together with a popsicle dance party. Our group on the very first night shared that they all love music, they love to dance and of course, they love popsicles. @kindermournclt
@mychemofairy is friendly, fun and special! The book is amazing and helps to create a special experience for kids going to clinic often for chemo or infusions! So thankful for this wonderful resource! #mychemofairy
Trixie the Bear learns all about having surgery 🏥 She learned about “the fixing room”… the mask for sleepy medicine… and all of the important patient information the doctors and nurses need to keep her safe! #preparation #childlife
Today Hopper the frog 🐸 had quite the check up… needed glasses, a patch, sleepy medicine, an IV… and a hand to hold. #medicalplay #Hopper
Leonardo needed some pokes and infusions to make him “strong and healthy and a really good, good guy” 💪 🐢 #teenagemutantninjaturtles #brave&strong
Calm and Worried … two very common topics. Tape pictures can help to focus attention, breathing and imagination! #calm&worried #childlife
When a small 6 year old voice says, “this is Henry, he wants to come to our group tonight. You know I have a friend named Henry and he comes in here with me for therapy and he loves belly rubs.” … and I whisper, “guess what! I know Henry too, and Miss Lauren is a special friend of mine!” … and she quickly says “me too!” 💕💗💕 @lafalduti 💕 #birthdayhappies #warmheart #misslaurenplaytherapy #missbrittanychildlife @kindermournclt
Preparation for procedures can include pretend medical equipment, real medical equipment, photos, drawings, books and more! Here we learned about an upcoming endoscopy and colonoscopy … and even made “scopes” out of pipe cleaners and used play dough to create the “camera” on the end of the scope … this allows for manipulation of the materials and the opportunity for the child to “teach back” to the specialist, parent or both! #preparation #decreaseanxiety #childlife #healthycoping
